OpenAI Data Residency for Business Customers

OpenAI’s data residency feature lets eligible business customers store their ChatGPT and API data within selected geographic regions. By keeping content such as conversations, files, and generated assets at rest locally, organizations can meet regional regulatory requirements, improve latency, and maintain tighter control over data access and governance while ensuring compliance with privacy standards.

    Technical Overview of Data Residency

The service extends OpenAI’s existing security framework by anchoring data storage to the cloud computing architecture of the chosen region. Requests routed through regional endpoints are processed without persisting model inputs on central servers, aligning with the guidelines outlined in the OpenAI system card. This design isolates data physically and logically, supporting both performance and legal obligations.

    Encryption and Key Management

All data at rest is protected with AES-256 encryption, while data in transit uses TLS 1.2+ protocols. Customers can enable Enterprise Key Management to supply their own encryption keys, adding an extra layer of isolation and control over cryptographic material.

    Regional Storage Architecture

Each supported region operates dedicated storage clusters that host customer content, including chat histories, uploaded files, custom GPT configurations, and generated images. The architecture ensures that these assets never leave the selected geographic boundary unless explicitly transferred by the customer.

    Compliance and Governance

The residency model is built to satisfy standards such as GDPR, CCPA, ISO/IEC 27001, and SOC 2 Type 2. OpenAI provides a Data Processing Addendum that clarifies responsibilities, helping organizations demonstrate adherence to local data protection laws.
